Couples Therapy

When you begin a relationship or say, "I do", it's hard to imagine you'll ever need couples therapy. Marriage counseling allows you and your partner to identify the causes of problems and ways to solve them with the help of a therapist.

Your Marriage Matters

Mind Matters believes your marriage matters, and we're making couples counseling more mainstream and accessible for today's relationships. It's not always easy to admit that your relationship may be in trouble, but tackling problems earlier can prevent problems down the road. Signs couples therapy may be helpful for you include:

  • Infidelity, physical or emotional, is a red flag that something isn't working in your marriage.
  • You're having more frequent or intense arguments and disagreements.
  • There's a breakdown in communication, with one or both of you withdrawing from the other.
  • You have little to no intimacy or a sudden decrease in the usual amount.
  • You and your partner cannot agree on finances or are hiding spending habits from each other.

How to Discuss Marriage Therapy with Your Partner

Asking your spouse to go to therapy with you can feel intimidating. Here are some tips for starting that conversation:

  • Choose a time when you are both relaxed and have few distractions.
  • Be honest and share your reasons for wanting to explore marriage counseling.
  • Give your partner a chance to respond and listen without interrupting.
  • Have an open mind and be willing to explore other options if your spouse has suggestions.

Does Marriage Counseling Work?

Statistics aren't exciting but valuable when determining if marriage counseling is worth it. Over the last few decades, the success rate of marriage counseling has risen from 50% to about 73%. It does work, but not for everyone. You can get the most from couples therapy in a few ways:

  • Don't wait until it's too late. Most people endure marital problems for several years before they commit to therapy, and this can make it more challenging to repair the damage.
  • Work on individual issues first. Nobody is perfect, and our therapists don't expect our clients to be without any personal problems unrelated to the relationship. However, if one or both of the partners have untreated mental health or substance use disorders that are affecting the relationship, couples counseling will not solve that issue.
  • Be an active participant in your counseling. Therapists can't "fix" people, and we can only help you if you're motivated to see results. One of the best ways to do this is to apply what you learn

How Successful is Online Couples Therapy?

Since online couples therapy is still a new concept, the official statistics aren't swaying one way or the other. The research is promising, though, based on the success of online individual therapy. Online couples therapy has a few unique challenges – focusing on the computer can make it more difficult to give your partner your full attention, and it may be more difficult for your therapist to de-escalate tense situations when they aren't in the same room. This doesn't mean you should discount online therapy, especially if it's the best option.

What to Expect from Marriage Counseling

During your first session, your therapist will get to know you and your partner and ask what you want to accomplish with therapy. The three of you will work together to establish goals and a timeline to achieve them. While you are working on your goals, you'll have the opportunity to learn several things that will benefit your relationship:

  • How to communicate in a way that is effective for both of you.
  • Discover what your partner's triggers are and learn to avoid them in a respectful way.
  • Express your needs without feeling anger or resentment toward your spouse.
  • Learn to be proactive instead of reactive.
  • Set and respect boundaries and compromise on important issues.

Our team of therapists knows that your mind matters, and we can help you harness its power so you can live a happier, more balanced life. You're more than just a client file to us; we don't have a cookie-cutter approach to couples therapy.
