What is Individual Therapy?

What is Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy involves sessions that include only you and your therapist. It's a time for you to talk about your struggles, hopes, and fears in a safe, judgment-free place. Beyond that, individual therapy looks different for everyone. You and your therapist will work together to choose a therapeutic approach and develop a treatment plan that will optimize your ability to achieve your therapeutic goals and create your best life. Your mind is incredibly powerful, and with support from our skilled therapists, you can take back control from anxiety, depression, PTSD, and other mental health struggles.

Common Goals

You will work together with your therapist to set personal goals that are unique to you. However, many issues are common, and many clients have one or more of these goals in mind:

  • Developing healthier habits
  • Lessening harmful behaviors and thought patterns
  • Improving communication skills
  • Regulating emotions
  • Learning to establish and maintain healthy boundaries

Mental Health = Physical Health

Your mental and physical health are inextricably linked. Most people prioritize physical health. Seeing a therapist for anxiety or depression is no different than visiting a doctor to treat asthma or a broken bone. What can happen if you don't acknowledge your mental health? You can develop physical problems that can, in turn, worsen your mental health. It's a vicious cycle. Anxiety and depression can cause digestive problems, weakened immune systems, weight gain, difficulty sleeping, and heart disease.

Stopping the Stigma

The stigma surrounding mental health is one of the primary reasons why over 50% of people with a mental health condition don't seek treatment. We're here to help eliminate this stigma by educating people about the importance of mental health and starting conversations that encourage people to examine their opinions and beliefs.

I Talk to My Friends - Why Do I Need a Therapist?

Friends can offer exceptional support and have an ear ready to listen when you have a problem, so how are friends different from therapists?

  • Therapists spend years learning about human behavior, social dynamics, and mental illness and can provide helpful feedback and coping skills that a friend often cannot.
  • Therapists are neutral; friends are not. We don't have a personal stake in your life, so we can offer objective advice and solutions.
  • Even the most loyal friend may share something you tell them in confidence. Our therapists adhere to laws requiring confidentiality.

Signs Individual Therapy May Be Helpful for You

We all have bad days sometimes, but if you are having more bad days than good, you may want to give therapy a try. It's not always a black-and-white situation, but there are some things to look for:

  • You're having frequent mood swings or extreme feelings of anger or sadness that aren't usual for you.
  • You no longer enjoy your favorite hobbies and activities.
  • You have persistent feelings of worthlessness, guilt, or low self-esteem.
  • You have less interest in your appearance and aren't maintaining basic hygiene.
  • You're struggling to perform at work or school.

Individual Therapy Hasn't Worked for Me

Attending therapy sessions and not getting the results you were hoping for is incredibly frustrating, but if you're struggling with your mental health, we're confident we can help. We ask you to consider a few things before deciding therapy will never help you:

  • Therapy is not a quick fix. It can take between 8-12 sessions before you make noticeable progress. It takes longer to heal a problem than to conceal the symptoms.
  • Therapy is hard work. Your therapist can offer you new perspectives, ideas, and resources, but it's up to you to use these tools to improve your mental health.
  • There are many approaches and styles when it comes to therapy, and the first one you tried may not have been the best one for you.

It is important to find a therapist that fits your personality and preferences. Liking and trusting your therapist matters. If you didn’t succeed previously, your therapist may not have been the best fit for you. We encourage you to try again.

I Have an Appointment for Individual Therapy - Now What?

After giving yourself a round of applause for making your first individual therapy appointment, you can get the most out of your session by doing some prep work.

  • Think about why you're choosing therapy. This reason can be as broad or specific as you like, but know what's prompting you to explore therapy as a solution.
  • We can't stress this enough – you aren't stuck with the first therapist you see. Feeling comfortable with your therapist is one of the most essential parts of the therapeutic process. If you decide your current therapist isn't a good fit, you can see another, and they won't take it personally. We guarantee that we will try our best to fit you with someone you enjoy.
  • Have realistic expectations for your first visit. We'll spend this time getting to know you and deciding what you want to accomplish during your sessions. We won't dive headfirst into deep topics during the first few visits.

The Mind Matters Difference

Our team of therapists knows that your mind matters, and we can help you harness its power so you can live a happier, more balanced life. You’re more than just a client file to us; we don’t have a cookie-cutter approach to therapy. Mental health is vital for everyone, and our goal is to make treatment accessible and welcoming to anyone who needs it.
